ATM Screen Advertising vs. Billboards: Where Your Ad Gets Seen

Published September 23, 2026 · 2 min read · By BayTM Services

Billboards are the default for local brands that want to be seen — realtors, attorneys, dentists, restaurants, personalities. They work. But they’re expensive, slow to change and seen from a car doing 70. There’s another screen that every one of those brands’ customers stands in front of, on purpose, with nothing else to look at: the ATM.

Attention, not impressions

A billboard’s audience is large and mostly in motion. Drivers typically glance for a moment, and outdoor-media figures estimate exposures rather than measuring attention.

An ATM screen is the opposite. The audience is smaller, but every viewer is standing still at arm’s length, looking directly at the screen for the length of a transaction. When nobody’s using it, the idle screen faces the room — the bar, the store, the laundromat — for hours.

Where the viewer is matters

A billboard reaches people on the way to somewhere. An ATM reaches people who’ve already arrived, in a business they chose, with cash in their hand. For a brand that wants to be remembered at the moment people are spending — a restaurant down the block, a local event, a service business — that’s a better moment.

Speed and flexibility

Printed billboard creative takes time to produce and post, and changing it costs money; digital billboards change faster but are priced accordingly. ATM screen creative is digital: new artwork can roll out across a network of machines in days, tested and adjusted without reprinting anything. Printed receipts add a second channel — an offer in the customer’s hand as they walk away.

Choosing where you show up

Billboards are sold by location on a road. ATM screens can be chosen by the kind of business and neighborhood they’re in: nightlife districts, family entertainment centers, salons, markets, gas stations along a corridor. That lets a brand match its placements to its customers instead of to traffic counts.

The case for both

This isn’t either/or. Static and digital billboards build broad awareness; ATM screens reach smaller audiences at close range, in chosen neighborhoods, with creative that can change quickly. Compare the cost per location and what you can measure before deciding.

How reach is estimated

Honest ATM media estimates keep the numbers separate: each host location’s typical daily customers, the transactions at the machine, how often your ad plays, and an explicit assumption about how many plays are actually seen. Ask for each input — and treat any single “impressions” figure without them with caution. No one can guarantee views.

See it for yourself

We built an ATM screen visualizer so you can upload your logo or ad and watch it on a real retail ATM, receipt and all. If you’d like to talk through a campaign — or a full cabinet wrap — request a media kit.
